In view of the importance of railway extension to com-
moroial development, the sanction of the Board of Commerco
has been obtained for the formation of a company to undertake
tho construction of a ling from Canton to Anoy. The first
section of this line, from Ch'uan Lung K'ou outside the Best
Date of Canton to Lu Chia Tol in Whampoa, is thirtson miloo
in length. It then passos through Tsong Ch'ong, Shih Lung
Chen in Tung Kuan, Po Lo, Kusi Chan, Hai Fong and Lu Fong in
Hui Chou; Hui bai, P'u Xing, and Chioh Yang districts in
Ch'ao Chou, branching off to outside the city of Ch'ao Chou
via Yao Ping, and thence to Amoy. The length of the line will

be about 500 miles,

Yu Magistrate, to thoroughly survey the localities through
